What Is Clean Hair Color? This Is All You Need to Know

Clean beauty: it's a trend we're all for, and one that inspired our latest hair color launch.But, what does it really mean for your hair color to be clean? We're teaching you all about the hair-loving ingredients we added, and the one's we left out of our first clean (and vegan!) permanent hair color, Total Color.

Formulated without:

  • Ammonia

A strong solution put into hair color in order to open the hair cuticle and deposit color during the coloration process and is known for its unpleasant odor.

  • Parabens

A commonly used preservative in hair color and care products that some consumers are mindful of not using.

  • Sulfates

Many hair color products contain surfactants that are sulfates – our formula does not contain sulfate surfactants.

  • Silicones

Silicones are made from synthetic materials that provide unique properties including added ‘slip’ for when combing and styling hair. In its various forms, silicones can have anti-frizz properties and also provide a protective film. However, silicones can also weigh hair down.

  • Mineral Oil

A petroleum-based oil. In hair color and hair care products, it can cause build up and weigh hair down.

  • Phthalates

Phthalates are used as solvents and plasticizers in shampoo and styling packaging. As part of Total Color's™ eco-friendly packaging initiative, we decided to create packaging without phthalates.

  • Gluten

Some hair color and conditioner formulas contain wheat proteins, which means gluten is in the formula. Total Color™ hair color has 0% gluten, which gave us extra room for natural oils like Cannabis Sativa (Hemp) Seed Oil and Camellia Oil.

An added bonus is that this clean permanent hair color is also vegan! Total Color™ hair color formula does not contain any animal derived ingredients or animal byproducts.

 

Formulated with:

  • Cannabis Sativa (Hemp) Seed Oil

Cannabis Sativa (Hemp) Seed Oil is derived from the seeds of the hemp plant that do not contain pychoactive properties. We include this oil in our nourishing cream formula to ensure your hair is lovingly cared for while you color. Small but mighty.

  • Camellia Oil

Treasured in Japan, Camellia Flower Oil is as fragrant and beautiful as its alluring blossom. Our Botanical Enriched Conditioning Gloss (curated specifically by shade) is infused with Camellia Oil.

  • Black Tea Extract

Black Tea Extract is included in our Botanical Enriched Conditioning Glosses specifically for dark hair shades: #10 Black, #30 Darkest Brown and #40 Dark Brown.

  • Sesame Oil

Sesame Seed Oil is part of our Botanical Enriched Conditioning Gloss for Total Color™ brunette hair color shades: #60 Light Brown, #63 Light Golden Brown, #51 Medium Ash Brown, #50 Medium Natural Brown, and #53 Medium Golden Brown.

  • Cranberry Extract

Cranberry extract is infused in our Botanical Enriched Conditioning Gloss formula and matched to the boldest Total Color™ hair color shades: #535 Medium Golden Mahogany, #48BV Burgundy and #6R Light Auburn.

  • Chamomile Extract

Chamomile Extract, made from daisy-like plants is included in our Botanical Enriched Conditioning Gloss to give your blonde a boost. Shades that contain this extract are: #100 Extra Light Natural Blonde, #93 Light Golden Blonde, #81 Medium Ash Blonde, #80 Medium Natural Blonde and #70 Dark Natural Blonde.

Plus, we added some high tech 'science-y' ingredients!

Science isn't always scary. Revlon® Total Color™ contains some technical ingredients that may be hard to pronounce, but allow for for our permanent hair color formulas that contain Color Surround Technology™ to be effective at covering stubborn grays and delivering long lasting color vibrancy.

  • Panthenol & Tocopheryl Acetate (Pro-Vitamin B5 + Vitamin E)

Panthenol & Tocopheryl Acetate are the science-y sounding names for the Pro-Vitamin B5 and Vitamin E enriching our Revlon® Total Color™ conditioning system.

  • Polyquaternium-22

This polymer is composed of an acid that forms a protective layer over the hair during the hair coloring process.

  • Steartrimonium Chloride

This ingredient is derived from a positively charged ion and is attracted to negatively charged proteins (found in damaged hair) which attach to damaged strands to minimize fly aways and improve manageability. Steartrimonium Chloride is included in the Total Color™ Cream Colorant as well as our Botanical Enriched Conditioning Glosses.

  • Polyquanternium-37

This high tech sounding ingredient in our Botanical Enriched Conditioning Glosses seals the hair cuticle and locks in color.

  • Dicetylidimonium Chloride

This conditioning ingredient works on all hair types and is known for protecting the surface of the hair when used as the final step in hair color treatments. Dicetylidimonium Chloride is part of our Botanical Enriched Conditioning Gloss formula, which ensures your hair is left silky soft.

  • Glycerin

A naturally occurring compound and a component of many lipids. Lipids provide moisturizing and conditioning properties to hair color formulas. Since Revlon® Total Color™ is free of animal derived ingredients, the only glycerin contained in our hair color kits is derived from plants.
